You can literally build an online business with ZERO capital at the beginning of your journey. In this podcast episode, we discuss a step by step process of how this can be achieved.
Are you familiar with the expression ‘It takes money to make money‘? That is not always the case. The reason that I chose this topic for the first episode of the podcast is that I know there are many people out there who want to start their own online business but they don’t have the money (that they assume they need) to invest in their online business. If this is something that you really want, with a bit of work, you can start to earn money to invest in something bigger that you have in your plans, so let’s go over a process that you can use that allows you to start with no money and progressively build your way up.
Step 1 – Fiverr
There are so many easy Fiverr gigs to make money and they can be about literally any topic at all so let’s talk about cocktails. Everybody likes a cocktail right? They are fun, delicious and colorful (which is very eye-catching online hint hint). Look at the image below of all these easy ways to make money on Fiverr
If you are creative enough, you could easily create some of the best Fiverr gigs to make money that will not take up too much if your time yet allows you to provide value to your customers.
Don’t worry about being an expert in making cocktails, take a look at the last 2 gigs above as an example. This is a case of somebody who is providing their customers with an eBook, so once they have taken the time to write the eBook, it’s the same amount of work for them every time, gig after gig, because all they do is send the new customer the same eBook gets. Hoe does that mean you don’t need to be an expert? Here is an AWESOME time hack! You can buy (at a very affordable price, cocktail eBooks that fall under PLR (Private Label Rights) meaning you have authority to re-distribute or re-sell that book. Do be careful about the exact terms on this as I have seen it vary on different PLR websites. They can be as little as $5 so once you have sold one, everything after that is profit. Not bad huh?
I’m sure you’re wondering how to make serious money on Fiverr if all you are charging is $5 per gig, right?
UPDATE: Since publishing this podcast, gig extras are now referred to as different ‘Package’ but they essentially mean the same thing. Let’s take a look at the image of the different packages that can be offered for your gig of ‘I will take Professional Photos of Your Cocktails for Your Website/Menu for $5’.
You can see that the Basic package will get the customer 3 different images but notice that if the customer wants the images shot, edited and returned to them within 1 day, they can pay an additional $5, instantly more money if you are prepared to complete your gig a bit faster!
This customer can upgrade to the Standard package, which entitles them to 3 times the amount of images but not having to pay 3 times the price. Customers like to see they are getting value for money. You’ll also see that this particular seller has given a 2 day timeline for this and you cannot choose to upgrade, perhaps they just cannot shoot, edit and return all 9 photos to you in a professional manner in such a short amount of time, or maybe they have a trick up their sleeve…
Lastly, we come to the Premium package. The word premium alone has such incredible selling ability. With this package the seller is offering 5 times the initial images and just like with the mid-level package, there may be more images, but they are discounted to enable your customer receiving value for money. You’ll also notice that the delivery time for this one is 1 day, but how can that be if it takes the seller 2 days to take 9 pictures, surely taking 15 pictures would take at least 3 days? This seller clearly knows how precious and valuable time is to his customer and is using this to their advantage. When a customer looks at all 3 packages, the customer sees that if they choose the Premium package, they not only get more images for a better price per image when broken down but also with a 1-day turnaround without having to pay the additional fee that the Basic package has. I know which package I would choose, even if I don’t need 15 images. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes.
Now you could be thinking to yourself ‘That is all well and good but I don’t know have an expensive camera, lighting gear and everything else that goes with it’. I bet you have a camera on your smartphone? Smartphone cameras these days can take absolutely stunning shots, it just requires a little practice. Have a look on Instagram for some example shots and to get some ideas. You’ll see I’ve included an image of what shows up when you type #cocktail into Instagram’s search bar. You’ll see it gives you suggested #hashtags that people are using. This can be an extremely powerful tool when marketing yourself or your product, but more on that in later podcast episodes. You don’t even need to use a fancy and colourful cocktail to practice with, you can use a glass of milk if you want, just play around with different angles and scenery, I can guarantee you’ll be proud of some of those shots and perhaps find a talent that you didn’t know you had.
Hopefully, at this stage, you are able to see that you could do quite a lot on Fiverr to make some money online and it could really be related to anything. Try to think differently about what gigs you could currently offer or what you would like to offer in the future. Sign up to Fiverr and list your gigs, who knows, you could strike gold!
Step 2 – Your Website
Your Website – The home of your online business that shows the world who you are and what you do. I like to use GoDaddy when I am searching for the perfect domain as they make it as simple as possible. All you need to do is enter the domain (website name) that you want into the search on their home page and see if it is available, if it us, you can get it for about $12 per year (seriously, that’s all it cost) and if the name you want is already taken, GoDaddy will offer suggestions similar to what you want that are available, they could even suggest something that you think is much better that your original idea.
Website Hosting – This is what allows your business doors to be open to the world 24/7. After you’ve secured the domain name that you want, hosting is the next logical step. I personally use Certified Hosting for my websites. The offer incredibly affordable packages that suit the majority of websites perfectly. From the image below, I would personally recommend the SH 500 package because of the Dedicated IP and the SSL Certificates as this help greatly when it comes to ranking your website successfully in Google.
cPanel – You’ll be sent the log-in details to your website’s cPanel (backend settings) once you confirm your hosting package. When you first log in to your cPanel, I’d recommend installing WordPress to your website as it’s highly customizable with so many themes and plugins to make your website exactly what you want it to be. WordPress is by far the most user-friendly system to operate your website which is why I can’t speak highly enough about it. To install WordPress once you are in your cPanel, scroll down to the Software section and click on the Softalicious Apps Installer. All you have to do now is click on WordPress and then click Install Now.
WYSIWYG – This stands for What You See Is What You Get. This is what makes WordPress so user-friendly, it is essentially like using Microsoft Word. If you want a sentence in bold just highlight it and click the button to make it bold. If you want to add a picture, just click Add Media, it couldn’t be any easier. No need to learn any confusing code!
Using Video – Video is the fastest growing form of content online today but don’t take it from me, listen to what the Queen of online video had to say in episode 70 of The Income Highway Podcast where Amy Schmittauer/Landino was nice enough to come on for an interview. If you want to add a YouTube video to your website/blog, just visit the video you want on YouTube and click the ‘Share’ button that is located underneath the video. Once you have done that and the new menu appears, just click on ‘Embed’ and you’ll see a very similar screen to the screenshot below. Don’t be scared off by the code, you don’t need to know what it means, you just have to copy and paste it into your website.
You can also scroll down on that pop-up which will bring up further options to really let you customize how you want videos to appear and play on your website. Play around with these settings and see what you think suits you best, you can always operate back and forth between these or have a mix and match too.
Social Media – For this example of running a cocktail website, I believe that Instagram would be your best option as even though a cocktail is based on taste, the colourful imagery that they provide is the next most appealing sense to us and as shown in the screenshot above, with a bit a practice, you can make your images look incredible and build a following quickly.
MailChimp – Email marketing is one of the most powerful forms of marketing to your business in the digital age. One email per week is what I would recommend as to not annoy your audience but at the same time, make them actually interested to open your emails (known as your ‘open-rate’, but more on that in episode 53 of The Income Highway Podcast‘). So what can you send your audience about cocktails every week? Simple, a different cocktail! Even if you have 100 different recipes, that’s almost 2 years worth of cocktails if you are concentrating on one per week.
Step 3 – Work on your business
That’s the secret, think about it, how many people do you know who have become successful by not working? It doesn’t exist. The more work that you put in, the bigger return that you receive, it’s really that simple. It will get to the stage that you can create a system that either automates itself or that you can hire a team to run your system but today was all about the initial building blocks, which are the hardest part. Once you get past this and you’re up and running, continue to run and you’ll reach your goal.
One question that people usually have at the beginning of their business journey is ‘How much will this cost?’ so I’ve included one of the videos from my YouTube channel below. Please feel free to check out the other helpful videos I have on the channel as they will hopefully provide value to you by helping you along your business journey.
